5 Tips for Painting Vinyl Siding

5 Tips for Painting Vinyl Siding Grand Rapids, MI

Vinyl siding is considered low maintenance because it doesn’t rot or peel. However, vinyl siding will fade after years of sun exposure. If your vinyl house siding looks faded, it may be time to visit your local paint store or call our painting contractors. Faded vinyl siding can make your house look neglected, which is why it’s important to keep up on maintenance.

Vinyl Siding Painting Tips

1.) Check the Warranty

If your vinyl siding is protected by a warranty, check the conditions before buying exterior paint. Some warranties are voided if you paint the siding or have stipulations for the type and color paint you can use. Some warranties are transferable, which means they can be transferred from the old owner to you. Be sure to check before you paint.

2.) Hire a Painting Contractor

You don’t have to hire a painting contractor. However, it’s so much easier to hire professional painters than it is to spend your entire weekend balancing on a ladder. Professional painters also have the training and experience needed for painting vinyl siding so it improves the curb appeal of your home.

3.)Wash Vinyl Siding

You can’t paint over dirt and grime, which is why you need to hand wash or power wash the exterior of your home. While our professional painters might use a pressure washer, we typically advise homeowners against doing the same. If you don’t have experience using a pressure washer, you could accidently force water behind the siding to cause water damage, mold, and wood rot.

Protect your home by trusting it to our reputable painting contractors. We provide pressure washing services so exterior paint sticks better to vinyl siding. Power washing siding will also remove dirt, grime, and mildew so it looks better from the street.

4.) Choose a Light Paint Color

Dark colors absorb more heat than light colors. If you choose a dark exterior paint, the vinyl siding may warp or buckle after absorbing too much heat. To understand how this works, remember that most people wear light colors in the summer to stay cool. Wearing dark colors under the sweltering sun causes your body to absorb more heat. The same principle applies to your vinyl siding.

Your vinyl siding was manufactured to resist heat to a certain extent and given an appropriate paint color. However, we don’t recommend covering your pale yellow siding with navy exterior paint. A dark paint color could overwhelm the siding’s ability to resist heat and result in warping or buckling. We recommend checking paints specifically made for vinyl siding with high heat resistance.

5.) Understand How Exterior Paint Looks Year-Round

It’s natural for vinyl siding to expand and contract with fluctuating temperatures. When installed properly, you should be able to move each panel a little bit horizontally. That way, the siding won’t buckle when it expands in hot temperatures. When the siding contracts in cold temperatures, you may have a slight gap in color at the seams. This is perfectly normal.
